Some of this wave rests on genuinely interesting science. Much of it rests on a metaphor. This article is an audit: what mitochondria really are, why the marketing borrowed their prestige, what each headline ingredient can and cannot show in humans, and what the research says actually improves mitochondrial function — an answer no drink brand loves, because it cannot be bottled.

There is no drink, powder, or ampoule that contains functioning mitochondria, and if one did, your digestive tract would dismantle it like any other food. Nobody is drinking mitochondria, and no serious product claims to deliver them.
What "mitochondrial" supplements actually contain is molecules that participate in, or are claimed to support, mitochondrial metabolism: cofactors, precursors, and plant compounds. That is a legitimate idea in principle — some of these molecules genuinely sit inside the energy-producing machinery. Whether swallowing extra changes anything measurable is a separate question, and it is the one this audit tries to answer honestly.
Why mitochondria became marketing's favorite organelle
The schoolbook line — "the mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell" — deserves an honest upgrade. A cell does not have one power plant; it has hundreds to thousands of them, constantly fusing, dividing, and being recycled. They take the breakdown products of food, strip electrons from them, and pass those electrons down a chain of protein complexes — the electron transport chain — using the energy to manufacture ATP, the currency every active process in the body spends. As tissues age, mitochondria genuinely become less efficient, produce more reactive by-products, and are cleared and replaced more sluggishly. Below is the honest state of play for the ingredients that carry the cellular-energy category. "Human evidence" means controlled trials in people with outcomes you would notice — not cell-culture or mouse data, which nearly every ingredient here has in abundance.

CoQ10 deserves its reputation — in context. It is not marketing fiction: coenzyme Q10 physically ferries electrons between complexes of the transport chain, and tissue levels decline with age. But the supplement evidence clusters in specific medical contexts — statin-associated muscle symptoms, where trial results are genuinely mixed, and chronic heart failure, where it has been studied as an add-on to treatment. For a healthy 35-year-old hoping to feel more energetic, the trial record is thin. As for "skin energy" claims: a few small studies have looked at oral CoQ10 and wrinkle measures, but they are short and limited — "evidence is limited" is the honest summary.
NAD+ precursors are the hot ones, and the honesty gap is widest here. The underlying science is genuinely exciting: NAD+ sits at the center of energy metabolism, its levels fall with age, and NMN and NR demonstrably raise blood NAD+ in humans. That last fact is what every label leans on. What the labels skip is the next step: trials asking whether raising NAD+ makes people measurably fitter, sharper, or younger-functioning have so far been small, short, and inconsistent. Add regulatory turbulence — NMN's status as a dietary ingredient in the US has been contested for years because it is also being investigated as a drug — and the fair summary is: watch this space, but nobody selling you NMN today can show you the outcome data to justify the price.
Urolithin A is the most interesting story in the category. Your gut bacteria can convert compounds from pomegranates and walnuts into urolithin A, which in laboratory models triggers mitophagy — the clearing of worn-out mitochondria so fresher ones dominate. Many people lack the bacterial equipment to make it from food, which is the rationale for supplementing the molecule directly. The direct-supplementation trials that exist are small but randomized and better designed than most of the category, reporting improvements in muscle endurance and mitochondrial markers in middle-aged and older adults. Still early, still largely one commercial research program — but this is what a supplement trying to earn its claims looks like.
The rest of the shelf is thinner. PQQ has an appealing biogenesis story built almost entirely on cell and animal work. Alpha-lipoic acid has real research behind it — mostly in diabetic neuropathy, a context that says little about healthy people seeking energy. L-carnitine matters enormously in genuine deficiency and barely at all outside it. And the blend products deserve their own audit line: a formula listing six mitochondrial actives often contains each at a fraction of the dose any study used. Underdosing is the quiet norm of this category. Before buying any blend, compare the milligrams on the label to the milligrams in the research it name-drops.
What actually improves mitochondrial health
Here is the headline the cellular-energy industry cannot print: the single intervention repeatedly shown to increase mitochondrial content and function in humans is exercise. Endurance training in particular drives mitochondrial biogenesis — your muscles literally build more and better mitochondria in response to sustained demand — and decades of exercise-physiology research back this at a level no supplement approaches. It is free, it is unpatentable, and it outperforms everything in the table above.
The rest of the podium is equally unglamorous:

- Not smoking. Smoke exposure damages mitochondrial DNA and function directly. No supplement offsets it.
- Metabolic health. Chronic overnutrition keeps mitochondria flooded with fuel and working inefficiently; maintaining normal weight, blood sugar, and regular movement keeps the network flexible.
None of this means the supplements are worthless. It means the order of operations matters. A person who trains, sleeps, and doesn't smoke has done more for their mitochondria than any ampoule can — and a person who does none of those things cannot buy the difference back.
The skin angle and the drink format, kept honest
"Cellular energy" has also migrated into skincare copy. Decoded: topical CoQ10 has modest data as an antioxidant ingredient in creams — reasonable, unspectacular — and most "energizing" skincare is antioxidant-plus-humectant chemistry wearing a mitochondrial story. That's not a scandal; it's just branding, and it deserves the same discount you'd apply to any borrowed-biology label.
The drink format itself deserves one fair point and one caution. Fair point: some of these molecules, CoQ10 especially, absorb poorly from dry tablets, and liquid or lipid-based delivery genuinely helps — the format logic we laid out in liquids vs. pills and in our audit of focus drinks. Do mitochondria supplements work?
Mostly: not yet proven. The honest tier list runs from "real but niche" (CoQ10 in specific medical contexts) through "promising but early" (urolithin A) to "interesting biology, outcome data still young" (NMN, NR) and "too early to say" (PQQ). No ingredient in the category has strong evidence that it makes healthy people feel or function measurably better, and blend products are frequently underdosed relative to the studies they cite. If you try one, treat it as an experiment with a defined endpoint, not a proven therapy.
What actually improves mitochondria?
Exercise — clearly, repeatedly, and by a wide margin. Endurance and interval training stimulate the body to build new mitochondria and improve the function of existing ones; this is one of the most replicated findings in exercise physiology. Sleep, not smoking, and good metabolic health round out the list. Supplements, at best, sit on top of that foundation; they do not substitute for any part of it.
Is NAD+ worth taking?
