Every ingredient in skincare has a story; centella asiatica has a legend. The plant — a small, creeping herb with fan-shaped leaves that grows in wetlands across Asia — is nicknamed tiger grass, from old folklore that wounded tigers rolled in patches of it to heal. That's a tale, not a study. But it points at something real: humans in several separate medical traditions independently noticed this plant does something for damaged skin. This dossier unpacks what, exactly — the plant, its four working compounds, the honest state of the evidence, and how to read the word "cica" on a label, because that word now covers everything from pharmaceutical-grade extracts to a marketing garnish.

From tiger grass to the clinic
Centella asiatica — also called gotu kola or Indian pennywort — has centuries of documented use in Ayurvedic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and folk medicine across Southeast Asia and Madagascar, most consistently for one purpose: wounds. Poultices and infusions of the leaves were applied to cuts, burns and ulcers long before anyone could say why they seemed to help.
The "why" started arriving in the mid-twentieth century, when chemists isolated asiaticoside, the plant's signature molecule, and researchers began studying centella extracts in actual wound care. Out of that work came something most skincare fans have never heard of: TECA, a titrated (standardised) extract of centella asiatica containing defined proportions of the plant's key triterpenes. Standardised centella preparations — Madécassol is the best-known brand name — have been used for decades in Europe and Asia as pharmaceutical products for wounds, burns and scar management. That matters for how you read the evidence later: much of centella's scientific reputation was built on concentrated, standardised pharma-grade material, not on the cosmetic creams that borrow its glow.
The cosmetic chapter came much later. French pharmacy brands had quietly used centella for years, but the global "cica" boom is a K-beauty story from the mid-2010s, when Korean brands built entire soothing lines around the ingredient and the abbreviation stuck — a nod to cicatrice, the French word for scar. Today "cica" is less an ingredient name than a product category, which is exactly why it needs decoding.
The four actives, decoded
Strip away the botany and centella's skincare interest comes down to four related molecules, all members of a family called triterpenes. They come in two pairs, and the pairing is simple chemistry: two of them are "free acids," and two are the same acids with a sugar chain attached (a glycoside — think of it as the acid wearing a sugar backpack).
- Asiatic acid — the free acid form. Small, relatively skin-penetrant, studied mostly for its role in signalling that supports collagen production and wound repair.
- Asiaticoside — asiatic acid plus its sugar chain. The molecule that made centella famous in wound-care research; larger and slower to penetrate, but skin enzymes can clip off the sugar to release the acid.
- Madecassic acid — the second free acid, closely related to asiatic acid, studied mainly for calming inflammatory signalling.
- Madecassoside — madecassic acid with its sugar attached, and the compound modern cosmetic science leans on hardest for soothing. When a product lists one isolated centella compound, it's usually this one.
Why does the pairing matter to you? Because the glycosides (the "-oside" pair) are gentler, more water-soluble and better suited to leave-on cosmetic formulas, while the free acids are more biologically punchy but harder to formulate and slightly more likely to annoy very reactive skin at high levels. Pharmaceutical TECA sidesteps the choice by combining them in fixed, titrated ratios. Cosmetic products, by contrast, can use the whole plant extract (all four actives plus amino acids, flavonoids and other minor components, at whatever concentration the extract happens to contain), a single isolated compound like madecassoside at a declared percentage, or a proprietary "complex" that tells you almost nothing. Same word on the front of the jar — cica — very different things inside it.
What the evidence supports
Here is an honest grading, claim by claim, because centella is a genuinely decent ingredient wrapped in genuinely inflated marketing.
Wound healing: good evidence, wrong context. Standardised centella extracts have real clinical history in wound and burn care. But that evidence comes from pharmaceutical concentrations applied to actual wounds under medical supervision. It tells you the plant's biology is real; it does not tell you that a 2% cica cream will "heal" anything. Cosmetics aren't wound treatments and aren't allowed to be.
Soothing and redness: decent, and the best-supported cosmetic claim. Madecassoside and whole centella extracts have a reasonable body of research — cell studies, animal work and a number of small human trials — showing calming effects on irritated skin, including post-procedure and retinoid-irritated skin. The human trials are mostly small and often industry-run, so hold the enthusiasm to "reliably soothing," not "transformative." That's still more than most botanicals can claim.
Barrier support: decent. Studies on centella-containing moisturizers show improved hydration and reduced water loss versus baseline. The catch: those formulas also contain ceramides, panthenol, glycerin and occlusives, so isolating centella's exact contribution is hard. Fair reading — centella meaningfully assists barrier repair; the moisturizer base does much of the heavy lifting.
Anti-aging and collagen: the weak flank. Asiaticoside does stimulate collagen synthesis in lab models, and brands extrapolate hard from that. Robust human evidence that cosmetic cica products reduce wrinkles is thin. If you buy centella, buy it for calm skin, not for firmness — evidence here is limited, and anyone promising otherwise is selling past the data.
Reading a cica label
This is where most cica guides go quiet, and it's the part worth bookmarking. Because "cica" isn't a regulated term, two products wearing the same green label can contain a titrated extract at a meaningful dose — or a whisper of leaf water for storytelling. The ingredient list tells you which, if you know what each term means.

One more honest note: ingredient lists don't disclose concentrations, so even this table gives you probabilities, not certainties. But a product listing madecassoside by percentage is making a checkable claim, and that alone filters out most of the garnish tier.
Who it helps — and its limits
Centella earns its place for a specific crowd. If you see yourself below, it's a sensible buy; if not, it's a pleasant extra.

Now the limits, plainly. Centella will not cure rosacea, eczema, perioral dermatitis or any other medical condition — those have vascular and immune drivers that no cosmetic reaches, and prescription treatments exist that actually work. If your redness is persistent, burning, or worsening, a dermatologist visit is worth more than any serum. Cica also won't fade deep scars despite its scar-adjacent name, and it's not an actives replacement: it calms skin, it doesn't resurface, brighten or meaningfully firm it.
Where it fits in a routine
Placement is undramatic, which is part of centella's appeal. A cica serum or ampoule goes after cleansing and before moisturizer; a cica cream simply is the moisturizer. Morning or evening, daily use is fine — this is an ingredient you can use indefinitely, not one you cycle.
Pairing logic: centella layers happily under or over almost everything, including retinoids, vitamin C and exfoliating acids — in fact, sitting a cica layer alongside your strong actives is the classic way to keep them tolerable. Pairing it with niacinamide is common and sensible, since the two calm redness through different routes. The one real caution is strategy, not chemistry: if your barrier is actively wrecked, a cica product should replace your actives for a week or two, not accompany them. Soothing a barrier you keep re-injuring is bailing a boat while drilling holes. Is cica the same thing as centella asiatica?
Functionally yes, legally no. "Cica" is a marketing nickname, not a regulated ingredient name, so a "cica" product usually contains centella asiatica or its isolated compounds — but nothing forces it to contain a meaningful amount, and some "cica complexes" lean on other soothers entirely. Check the INCI list for centella asiatica extract, madecassoside, asiaticoside or TECA rather than trusting the front label.
Can centella cause breakouts?
The extract itself is considered low-risk for clogging pores and is generally well tolerated even by acne-prone skin. When a cica product does break someone out, the culprit is usually the base formula — rich occlusive creams, certain esters — rather than centella. If you're acne-prone, choose a lightweight cica serum or gel texture over a heavy balm, and remember that any new product can trigger an adjustment period.
Centella vs niacinamide for redness — which is better?
They're teammates, not rivals. Centella works mainly by damping the irritation response itself; niacinamide works more on barrier lipid production and overall skin resilience. For acute, reactive redness — post-retinoid, post-sun, flare days — centella is the more direct pick. For gradual, baseline blotchiness, niacinamide has the stronger track record. Many well-designed soothing formulas simply include both.
How long until centella improves redness?
Two different clocks. Acute irritation — the hot, stingy kind after an aggressive active or environmental stress — often looks calmer within a few days of consistent use. Baseline redness that's been there for months shifts slowly, on the order of one to two months, and only partially, because chronic redness usually has vascular causes cosmetics can't reach. If eight weeks of consistent use changes nothing, the answer isn't a stronger cica cream; it's a dermatologist.
