So when a label promises to "activate cellular detox," it is describing something your liver was already doing while you read the label. And polyphenol-rich plants — berries, tea, coffee, olive oil, colorful vegetables — supply a broad class of compounds consistently associated with better outcomes in dietary research, though separating them from the overall quality of the diets that contain them is notoriously hard. Note the shape of every claim in that paragraph: supports, contributes to, is a component of. That's not legal hedging for its own sake — it is the scientifically accurate description. Food maintains the normal function of your defenses. It does not speed up detoxification, and anyone selling that verb is overreaching.

Nothing on that list is exciting, which is exactly the point. Exposure reduction plus normal, well-supplied physiology outperforms any "defense" product — and most of it is free.
What to skip: a short detox-product audit
The urban-toxin anxiety this article addresses is the sales engine for an entire product category that deserves skepticism. Detox teas are, almost without exception, laxatives — the "results" are water and stool weight, not pollutants. Juice cleanses remove the protein your glutathione synthesis needs, which makes them mildly counterproductive for the exact goal they advertise. Daily activated charcoal binds indiscriminately in the gut, including to nutrients and medications, and has no access to pollutants already in your tissues. Do detox supplements actually work?
Not in the sense the word implies. No supplement removes pollutants from your body — that work is done by your liver, kidneys, lungs and gut, continuously. What a well-formulated supplement can legitimately do is supply nutrients that support those normal processes: vitamin C for protection of cells from oxidative stress, selenium as a component of antioxidant enzymes, B-vitamins for normal energy metabolism. That's a real but modest role. Any product claiming to "eliminate toxins," "cleanse your liver" or "purge heavy metals" is making a claim its category is not legally or scientifically entitled to.
How do I protect my skin from city pollution?
