Every autumn, and again every late spring, the same complaint appears on skincare forums: "Nothing in my routine changed, but my skin suddenly hates everything." The routine did not change. The air did — and with it, the speed at which skin loses water. That loss is transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, and it explains why the same skin behaves differently in January, April and August.

Skin loses water to the air all day; drier air speeds the loss — well-established physiology. Transitions are the risky windows because the environment changes faster than skin adapts. Adjust texture and cleansing gradually, before symptoms, not after.
The water your skin loses all day
Your body is mostly water; the air around you is not. So water moves continuously from the living layers of skin outward through the stratum corneum — the thin, dead outer layer — and evaporates. That passive, ongoing evaporation is transepidermal water loss. It is not sweat, which is an active process running through glands; TEWL happens everywhere, all the time, and it is entirely normal. A healthy barrier does not stop it — it slows it to a rate skin can comfortably sustain.
The braking system is the stratum corneum's structure, often described as bricks and mortar: flattened dead cells as the bricks, layered lipids — ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids — as the mortar. Water has to wind around the bricks and through the lipid layers, and that long path keeps the loss rate low. (The lipid system gets a full treatment in the barrier trinity.) Damage the mortar — harsh cleansing, over-exfoliation, dry air itself — and the path shortens, so water escapes faster.
Researchers measure TEWL with instruments, and elevated readings are widely used in barrier research as a marker of a compromised barrier. But readings vary so much by body site, instrument and conditions that quoting a universal "normal" figure would be misleading. For everyday purposes, TEWL is a relative idea: your skin has a comfortable baseline loss rate, and the interesting question is what pushes it above that.
What each seasonal shift actually changes
Evaporation runs on a gradient: the drier the air touching your skin, the faster water leaves it. That much is textbook physics, and it is the most important sentence in this article. Seasons change that gradient through several routes at once.
Humidity. Cold air holds less moisture than warm air, so when outdoor air comes inside and gets heated, its relative humidity drops — heated winter rooms feel parched even when the weather outside is damp. That means a steeper gradient against your face day and night. Air conditioning does something similar in summer: cooling air also dehumidifies it, which is why an air-conditioned office can be surprisingly dry in a humid August.
Temperature. Cold does more than dry the air. Sebum and barrier lipid production tend to slow in cold weather, so the "mortar" is replenished more sluggishly exactly when it is under the most stress — and shuttling between freezing streets and heated rooms adds swings skin never faces in a stable season.
Wind. A thin layer of slightly humidified air normally sits just above the skin, slowing evaporation. Wind strips it away continuously, so exposed skin loses water faster than ambient humidity alone would predict — it is why the wind-facing cheek chaps first.
And the transitions themselves. Skin adapts to the prevailing environment, but gradually — over weeks, not days — while the environment can flip in a single afternoon when the heating or the air conditioning switches on. In that lag, water loss runs above baseline. It is why the "skin suddenly hates everything" posts cluster in the transition months, not in deep winter, when skin has partly adapted to the dryness it lives in.
Skin does not read the calendar. It reacts to the day the radiators come on — and it adapts slower than the thermostat.
How to tell your loss rate is running high
You do not need an instrument, because elevated TEWL announces itself through feel before it shows through damage. The early signature, roughly in order of appearance:
- Tightness a few minutes after cleansing — the classic first sign.
- Moisturizer that "disappears," with skin asking for more by midday.
- Fine flaking at the sides of the nose, between the brows, along the jaw.
- Makeup clinging to patches where it sat smoothly a month ago.
- New stinging from previously fine products — a leakier barrier lets irritants in as readily as it lets water out.
Any one of these can have other causes. Several arriving together, within weeks of a seasonal switch, is a pattern worth acting on — they typically precede visible redness or cracking. Treat tightness as the smoke alarm, not the fire.
The seasonal adjustment guide
The aim in every season is the same — keep the loss rate near your skin's baseline — but the levers differ. When the air turns dry (autumn into winter)
Move up the texture ladder. Think of moisturizers as rungs: gel, lotion, cream, balm. Each rung adds more occlusive material — petrolatum, waxes, butters — that physically slows evaporation. When the heating starts, move up one rung, and keep a humectant underneath: glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw water into the upper skin, but in very dry air they need an occlusive layer over them or much of what they attract evaporates. If humectant-versus-occlusive is fuzzy, hydrating vs. moisturizing untangles it.
Rethink hot water. Hot water dissolves skin lipids more readily than warm — pleasant in the moment, costly after. Warm rather than hot, shorter rather than longer, and moisturize while skin is still damp.
Humidify where you sleep, honestly. A humidifier raises the humidity of one room, only while it runs, and it lowers the demand on your barrier rather than repairing anything. The bedroom, your longest unbroken stretch of hours, is the highest-value room; a cheap hygrometer will tell you whether the air there is actually dry. Do not over-humidify a cold home — condensation and mold are worse problems than dry skin.
Protect lips and hands first. Lips have an especially thin outer layer and little oil supply; hands get washed many times a day. Both show seasonal dryness before the face does. A pocket lip balm and hand cream by the sink prevent cracks that heal far slower than they open.
When the air turns warm (spring into summer)
Lighten layers — do not drop them. The common summer mistake is treating sweat and humidity as if they were skincare and skipping moisturizer. Sweat is salt water; once it evaporates, skin is no better hydrated, and frequent rinsing plus foaming cleansers can leave the barrier more stripped in August than in February. Swap the winter cream for a lotion or gel-cream and keep the habit.
Mind the air conditioning. Treat a heavily air-conditioned workplace as a mild winter: a slightly richer moisturizer on office mornings, hand cream at the desk. A facial mist alone tends to backfire — it evaporates and takes surface water with it — but a mist sealed under a thin cream layer is reasonable.
Treat sun as a barrier event. UV damages barrier lipids along with everything else. After a day of real sun, the useful response is boring: rinse gently, hydrate while damp, seal lightly, and rest the acids and retinoids for a night or two.
The transitions: change gradually, and start early
Because skin adapts slower than the weather turns, the best strategy is a gradual swap, begun when the environment changes rather than when symptoms appear.
- First: move the moisturizer one rung up (autumn) or down (spring) the texture ladder. Nothing else yet.
- Then: adjust cleansing — creamier and less frequent for the dry season; reintroduce foaming washes gradually, if at all, for the warm one.
- Then: retune the actives. Acids and retinoids stress the barrier while skin is mid-adaptation, so reduce frequency through the transition and rebuild after. (Where your retinoid sits on the strength ladder matters — see the retinoid spectrum.)
- Throughout: let symptoms steer. Post-cleanse tightness means move faster toward richness; unusual congestion means you overshot.

Is TEWL bad? Should I try to stop it completely?
No, and you could not anyway. Some outward water movement is part of how the stratum corneum stays hydrated and flexible. The goal is not zero loss but a loss rate your skin can sustain — which mostly means not letting dry air, harsh cleansing and over-exfoliation push it above baseline.
Does drinking more water lower TEWL?
For a normally hydrated person, there is little reason to think so. TEWL is governed by the condition of the outer skin layer and the dryness of the surrounding air, not by that day's water intake. Drink normally; the fix for seasonal dryness is the seal and the air, not extra glasses.
Do drinkable skincare supplements help with water loss?
Ingestible beauty products — including drinkable hyaluronic acid, whose molecular size is often discussed in marketing — are an area where the evidence is genuinely limited. Some small studies have associated oral HA with improvements in measured skin hydration, but the research base is young and results vary. A supplement may support skin hydration from within as one input among many; it is not a substitute for managing the air and the barrier, where seasonal TEWL is actually decided.
Why does my skin get oily and dry in summer?
Oil and water are separate systems. Sebum can be plentiful while the water content of the outer layer runs low — a combination air conditioning plus over-cleansing produces readily. The tell is skin that shines by noon but feels tight after washing. The answer is lighter hydration, not harsher cleansing.
