Ask which hair oil is "best" and you'll get a different confident answer from every corner of the internet. The honest answer is that the question is incomplete. Argan, jojoba, and camellia are the three oils most often pitted against each other, but they aren't really competitors — they're three chemically distinct materials that do different jobs. Argan is a nutrient-rich triglyceride oil with real conditioning weight. Jojoba isn't an oil at all in the chemical sense; it's a liquid wax that behaves remarkably like your scalp's own sebum. Camellia is a featherweight, high-oleic oil that vanishes into the hair and leaves mostly gloss behind.
Pick the wrong one for your hair type and you'll conclude, wrongly, that "hair oils don't work for me." Fine hair drowned in argan looks greasy by lunchtime; coarse, bleach-dried hair given two drops of camellia barely notices. So instead of crowning a single winner, this guide does two things: puts the three side by side so the differences are plain, then walks you through choosing — by hair type, by problem, by application step.
Fine or easily weighed-down hair: camellia (or jojoba). Thick, dry, coarse, or damaged hair: argan. Scalp care and lightweight conditioning: jojoba. And no oil — none — repairs protein damage; oils condition, smooth, and protect, but rebuilding broken hair is a different job.
The three oils, head to head
Everything that matters about a hair oil comes down to a few properties: what its molecules actually are, whether it can slip into the hair fiber or only coat it, how heavy it feels, and how quickly it goes off in the bottle. Here is the full comparison.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the best-documented "penetrating" hair oil in the published literature is actually coconut oil, whose small, straight triglycerides have been shown to reduce protein loss from washing. Penetration claims for argan and camellia rest on their chemistry (favorable, oleic-rich profiles) more than on direct hair studies — so treat "penetrates the shaft" marketing for any oil, including these, with mild skepticism. What is not in doubt is how they behave on the surface, and that's where most of their value lives anyway.
Argan: the rich all-rounder
Argan oil comes from the kernels of Argania spinosa, a tree that grows almost nowhere but southwestern Morocco. The cosmetic grade is cold-pressed from raw kernels (the nutty culinary version uses roasted ones), and its appeal for hair is a genuinely good fatty-acid profile: roughly balanced oleic and linoleic acids, with a respectable dose of vitamin E. That balance matters. Pure high-oleic oils feel rich; pure high-linoleic oils feel thin and oxidize quickly. Argan sits in the useful middle — substantial enough to condition coarse hair, not so heavy that it feels like a coating of butter.
On the hair fiber, argan does three things well. It smooths lifted cuticle scales so light reflects more evenly, which reads as shine. It reduces friction between strands, which means less mechanical breakage from brushing and fewer flyaways. And it slows how quickly water moves in and out of the fiber — relevant because repeated swelling and contracting of the strand with every wash (the phenomenon sometimes called hygral fatigue) is itself a source of cumulative damage. For porous, chemically treated hair that swells dramatically when wet, an oil layer before washing is one of the cheapest protective habits there is, which is why argan features so heavily in oil-rich formulas for high-porosity, damaged hair.
Now the honest drawbacks. First, argan's fame outran its supply years ago, and adulteration is a real problem: plenty of "argan oil" products are mostly cheaper oils or silicones with a token drop of argan for the label. Check the ingredient list — if argan appears after a string of other oils or below the fragrance, you're buying the word, not the material. Second, argan is simply too rich for fine, straight hair used at any generous dose; a strand that's thin to begin with shows every excess milligram. Fine-haired readers can use it, but at one-to-two-drop doses on the ends only — or choose a lighter oil and save themselves the tightrope walk.
Jojoba: technically not an oil
Here's the fact that reorganizes how you should think about jojoba: it is not an oil. True plant oils are triglycerides — three fatty acids mounted on a glycerol backbone. Jojoba, pressed from the seeds of a desert shrub native to the Sonoran borderlands, is a liquid wax ester: long, straight molecules of a fatty acid joined directly to a fatty alcohol, no glycerol involved. Almost nothing else in the plant kingdom looks like it. Its closest famous analog was spermaceti from whales — and when whaling bans took hold in the 1970s, jojoba was adopted as the substitute, which is how it entered cosmetics at scale.
Why does the chemistry matter for your hair? Two reasons. First, human sebum is itself partly composed of wax esters, so jojoba behaves on skin and scalp like something your body already knows: it spreads thinly, absorbs into the surface without a greasy afterfeel, and is famously well tolerated. That makes it the natural choice of the three for anything scalp-related — as a massage medium, or to soften a tight, flaky-feeling scalp. (One popular claim deserves a flag: the idea that jojoba "signals" your scalp to produce less sebum is repeated everywhere but poorly evidenced. What's defensible is that it's light, non-occlusive, and unlikely to make an oily scalp feel worse.)
Second, wax esters barely oxidize. A bottle of jojoba keeps for years without going rancid — a real, unglamorous advantage over delicate polyunsaturated oils that quietly spoil in six months on a sunny shelf.
The trade-off is conditioning power. Those same large, waxy, straight-chain molecules mostly stay on the surface of the hair; jojoba is not going to plump or deeply soften dry lengths the way a richer triglyceride can. Think of it as the trio's precision instrument: a near-weightless smoother and scalp oil, ideal for fine hair that collapses under richer formulas, and the wrong tool for rescuing straw-dry, bleached ends.
Camellia: the featherweight glosser
Camellia oil — tsubaki in Japanese — is pressed from the seeds of Camellia japonica and has centuries of documented use in Japanese hair grooming, where it was traditionally combed through long hair for sheen and slip. Chemically, it's the most extreme of the three: oleic acid makes up around 80% of it, higher even than olive oil, with very little of the fragile polyunsaturated fraction. In practice that means a light, stable, fast-absorbing oil that leaves a thin, even film and very little residue.
That thin, even film is the whole trick. Shine on hair is mostly a geometry problem — smooth, flat cuticle surfaces reflect light coherently; rough ones scatter it. Camellia excels at laying down just enough of a smoothing layer to organize that reflection without the dulling thickness a heavier oil can add. It's also a legitimately good humidity tool: a light hydrophobic film slows the moisture uptake that makes frizz-prone hair swell and buckle on damp days — the same logic behind taming humidity frizz without heavy silicones, achieved here with a single botanical material.
Drawbacks, honestly stated: genuine tsubaki is a specialty product. Much of what's sold as "camellia oil" is actually tea-seed oil from Camellia oleifera — a close cousin with a similar profile, so this is more a labeling annoyance than a scandal, but purists should read fine print. And camellia's effects are subtle by design. If your hair is severely dry or damaged, camellia will make it shinier while leaving the underlying dryness largely unaddressed. It's a finishing oil, not a treatment.
Which oil for your hair: an if-then guide
Work down this list and stop at the first line that describes you. Where two oils are named, the first is the stronger pick.
- If your hair is fine, straight, and easily flattened → camellia, then jojoba. One or two drops, warmed between palms, ends only, ideally on dry hair. Skip argan unless your ends are genuinely dry — and even then, one drop.
- If your hair is thick, coarse, or curly → argan. Coarse fiber and curl patterns need the richer film; light oils disappear without much effect. Four to six drops on damp hair is a sane starting dose.
- If your ends are bleached or highlighted → argan, used two ways: a generous pre-wash coating before shampooing, and a couple of drops to seal damp ends after. - If your scalp is oily but your ends are dry → two different tools: jojoba (sparingly) if you want to treat the scalp at all, argan on the ends only, nothing in between. Treating these as one problem with one product is how mid-lengths end up greasy and ends stay dry.
- If your scalp is flaky or itchy → proceed carefully, and reach for jojoba if anything. But know the caveat: classic dandruff involves a yeast (Malassezia) that feeds on certain oils, so oiling a flaky scalp can make matters worse. If flakes are persistent, the fix is an anti-dandruff shampoo, not an oil.
- If you want maximum shine above all → camellia. It's the one whose entire character is built around gloss.
- If you can only buy one bottle → fine hair: camellia. Everyone else: argan. It has the widest useful range across hair types and application steps.
Pre-wash, leave-in, or sealing: how to apply
The same oil performs differently depending on when it goes on. Three methods cover essentially every use case.
Pre-wash treatment (the most underrated)
Coat dry hair — mid-lengths and ends, generously — anywhere from thirty minutes to overnight before shampooing. The oil limits how much water the fiber absorbs during washing, which reduces the swell-and-contract stress of wash day, and it buffers the mechanical roughness of shampooing itself. Argan is the best of the three here; jojoba and camellia are too light to justify the step. If you leave it overnight, wear an old pillowcase, and expect to shampoo twice to remove it fully. Porous, damaged, or curly hair gets the most from this method; fine, healthy hair can skip it entirely.
Leave-in on damp hair (sealing, not moisturizing)
After washing, on towel-blotted hair, spread two to six drops (fine to coarse) through mid-lengths and ends. Be clear about what this does: oil contains no water and adds no moisture. What it does is slow the escape of the water already in your hair and smooth the cuticle as hair dries. If you use a water-based leave-in conditioner, apply it first — oil goes on last, as the seal. Applying oil first waterproofs the strand against everything that follows.
Finishing on dry hair (gloss and control)
A single drop rubbed to a film between both palms, then glided over the surface of styled hair, tames static, flyaways, and dullness. This is camellia's home turf, and the step where over-application shows fastest — if your palms look shiny after, you used too much. Whichever oil you use, keep it off the roots.
Two housekeeping notes. First, oils accumulate: if hair starts feeling coated or limp after a couple of weeks of daily use, a clarifying wash resets it. What none of these oils can do
This is the section most oil articles omit, and it's where expectations go to die. Keep these limits in mind and you'll never be disappointed by a good oil:
- They don't repair protein damage. Bleach and heat break bonds and strip keratin from inside the fiber. Oil smooths and protects what remains; it rebuilds nothing. - They don't moisturize. No water in, no hydration added. Oils retain moisture that's already there. On bone-dry hair, oil alone just makes dry hair shinier.
- They aren't heat protectants at styling temperatures. A flat iron runs far above the point where these oils degrade. Use a purpose-made thermal protectant for hot tools; save the oil for before or after.
- They don't make hair grow. Claims that any of these three oils stimulates growth are not well supported. A comfortable, healthy scalp is good for hair generally — that's the honest extent of it.
- Their benefits are temporary. Conditioning films wash out. That's not a flaw — it's what cosmetic conditioning is — but it means consistency matters more than any single application.
Common questions
Can I mix argan, jojoba, and camellia together?
Yes, and it often works better than any of them alone — this is essentially what good commercial blends do. The oils are fully miscible, and their strengths are complementary: a base of argan for conditioning, cut with camellia to lighten the feel, with jojoba adding spreadability and shelf stability. If you blend at home, mix small batches (the argan fraction still oxidizes on its own schedule), store them in a dark bottle away from the shower's heat, and adjust the ratio to your hair: more camellia for finer hair, more argan for coarser. What a home blend can't easily replicate is the ratio testing behind a professional formula — a blend tuned so one product behaves sensibly across different hair types rather than just averaging three oils together.
What about coconut oil — isn't that the best one?
Coconut has the strongest published evidence for penetrating the hair fiber and reducing protein loss during washing, so as a pure pre-wash treatment it's arguably the best-documented choice. But it's solid below room temperature, heavier in feel, notorious for leaving some hair stiff or waxy, and a poor finishing oil. The honest framing: coconut is a specialist pre-wash tool; argan, jojoba, and camellia are better all-around cosmetic oils. Many people use coconut before washing and one of these three after. None of this makes any of them "the best" — it makes them different tools.
Can hair oil cause hair loss or clog the scalp?
Oil on the lengths of your hair cannot cause hair loss — the fiber is dead, and shedding is governed at the follicle. On the scalp, the picture is more nuanced: heavy or constant oiling can trap debris, irritate a dandruff-prone scalp (the yeast involved metabolizes certain oils), and folliculitis is possible in rare cases when oil is layered on and never properly washed out. The practical rules: keep lengths-oils off the roots, wash scalp oil out within a day, and stop if you notice itching or new flaking. Used that way, none of these three oils threatens your hairline.
How many drops should I actually use?
Fewer than you think. On fine hair: one to two drops as a leave-in or finisher. Medium hair: two to four. Thick, coarse, or curly hair: four to eight on damp hair, more only if it visibly absorbs. The pre-wash treatment is the one exception where generosity is fine, since it's shampooed out. Do these oils expire?
They do, on very different clocks. Jojoba is the outlier — wax esters are so oxidation-resistant that a properly stored bottle lasts for years. Argan and camellia are real oils and typically stay good for one to two years unopened, less once opened, and noticeably less if stored in a warm, bright bathroom. Rancid oil smells sharp, crayon-like, or paint-like; if you catch that note, discard it. Rancid oils are not just ineffective — oxidized lipids are a source of the very free-radical stress you're using vitamin-E-rich oil to avoid.
Should I apply oil to wet, damp, or dry hair?
All three timings are legitimate; they just do different jobs. On soaking-wet hair, oil struggles to grip and mostly rinses off with the drips. Damp (towel-blotted) is the sweet spot for sealing water into the fiber before drying. Dry hair is right for finishing gloss and for pre-wash treatments. The one order rule that matters: anything water-based — leave-in conditioner, styling cream — goes on before the oil, never after.
