Flip over any two Korean masks and the ingredient lists often look near-identical: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, a humectant or two, some botanical extracts. What actually separates a €1 mask from a €7 one is usually the thing the essence is soaked into — or, in hydrogel's case, the thing the essence is. Material determines how well a mask hugs your face, how much liquid it can carry, how fast it dries out, and how thoroughly it blocks evaporation while you wear it. Those four properties, not the marketing copy, decide what a mask can do for your skin. So let's compare every common material honestly, with hydrogel — the format most people are really asking about — at the center.

The mask material landscape
Paper / cotton pulp. The original sheet mask: non-woven fibers pressed into a face-shaped sheet, then soaked in essence. It's cheap to manufacture, which is why most masks under a couple of euros use it. The trade-offs are physical: pulp sheets are relatively thick and stiff, hold a modest amount of essence per gram of material, and start lifting at the edges as they dry — usually within 15–20 minutes. They fit "most faces approximately" rather than your face specifically.
Cupra and tencel (lyocell). The mid-tier workhorses. These are fine regenerated-cellulose fibers — cupra from cotton linter, tencel from wood pulp — woven into much thinner, softer, semi-transparent sheets. They drape better than pulp, hold essence well and feel closer to a second skin. Most well-made mid-range Korean masks use one of these, and for everyday masking they are honestly all you need.
Hydrogel. The interesting one, and the reason this article exists. A hydrogel mask isn't a fabric soaked in essence — it's a water-based gel matrix, typically built on gelling agents like agar, carrageenan or other gums, in which the essence is suspended. The gel is the product: as it sits on skin, the matrix softens and gradually releases the liquid it holds. Hydrogels are usually 90-plus percent water by weight, feel cool and jelly-like, and come as two pieces (upper and lower face) because a full-face gel sheet would tear under its own weight.
Bio-cellulose. A dense, ultra-fine cellulose mat grown by bacterial fermentation — originally developed as a wound dressing. Its fiber network is far finer than any woven sheet, so it clings almost like a wet second skin and holds a remarkable amount of liquid for its thickness. It shares hydrogel's adherence advantage while being a true fiber sheet. Foil-backed. A conventional fiber sheet laminated with a thin metallised film. The foil layer doesn't deliver anything itself; its job is to stop evaporation from the outer surface, keeping the sheet wetter for longer and mildly trapping warmth. Think of it as a cheap fiber mask with a built-in lid. It looks dramatic in selfies, which has not hurt its popularity.
The head-to-head matrix
Here is the whole landscape in one table. "Occlusion" means how well the material blocks evaporation while worn — the property that most affects how much hydration your skin actually keeps.

Read the table cynically and a pattern emerges: you are mostly paying for adherence and evaporation control. That's not a small thing — it's the difference between a mask that works for 15 minutes and one that works for 40 — but it is a physical difference, not a pharmacological one.
Why hydrogel behaves differently
Because a hydrogel is a gel rather than a fabric, it has handling quirks worth knowing before you open one at 11 pm expecting a normal sheet mask.
First, it softens at skin temperature. Gel matrices built on agar and similar gelling agents loosen slightly as they warm, which is exactly what you want: the mask starts firm enough to handle, then relaxes onto your contours and releases its liquid gradually. It's also why a hydrogel that has been sitting in a hot bathroom can feel flimsy and tear-prone, and why chilling one in the fridge for 20 minutes makes it firmer, easier to place and gloriously cooling.
Second, the two-piece format. Nearly all hydrogels split into an upper (forehead and eyes) and lower (cheeks, mouth, jaw) piece. This isn't cost-cutting — a single full-face gel sheet would stretch and tear — and it has a real benefit: you can position each half independently, so the fit around the nose and jawline is far better than any one-piece sheet achieves.
Third, slip versus grip. A fiber sheet grips skin the way damp fabric does. A hydrogel initially slides — it only develops its suction-like cling once it has warmed and settled for a minute or two. Apply it to a freshly essence-slicked face while leaning over a mirror and it will migrate; lie back for the first few minutes and it locks in place. This is also why hydrogel is the wrong choice for masking while doing chores, and why the fully-sealed Korean wrapping mask — which takes the occlusion idea to its extreme — became the format for people who want maximum seal without any sliding at all.
What materials actually change (and what they don't)
Time for the claim decoder, because mask marketing leans hard on absorption promises.
What a better material genuinely changes: contact (a mask that touches 100% of your face treats 100% of it — pulp sheets genuinely miss the sides of the nose and the jawline), wear time (a mask that stays wet for 40 minutes delivers humectants for 40 minutes), and occlusion (slowing evaporation keeps the outer skin layers hydrated longer, which temporarily plumps fine lines and improves how the skin holds the hydration you've applied). These are real, and they're why hydrogel and bio-cellulose visibly outperform pulp masks for pre-event prep.
What no material does: force actives deeper than skin physiology allows. Claims that a premium material makes ingredients "absorb 5x better" don't hold up to how skin works — penetration of any ingredient is governed mainly by the ingredient's own chemistry and the state of your skin barrier, not the fabric holding it. A hydrogel delivers hydration longer and more evenly, not deeper. Honest framing matters here: masking of any kind is an intensive-hydration and occlusion step, the same principle that overnight masking stretches across a full night of wear. If a brand's central promise is deep delivery of a dramatic active through a fancier sheet, be skeptical of the sheet and look at the active instead.
One more honesty note: essence quality still matters more than material. A tencel mask soaked in a well-formulated humectant-rich essence will beat a hydrogel carrying a thin, fragrant water. Material sets the ceiling; the formula decides how close you get to it.
Choosing by situation
Skip the "which is best" framing and choose by what tonight actually is:
- Quick daily or near-daily hydration → paper, pulp or tencel is genuinely fine. At daily frequency, price per mask matters more than a marginal fit advantage, and 15–20 minutes of wear is all you need. Pair it with a facial roller over the mask if you want to improve contact on a budget sheet.
- Event prep — tomorrow's wedding, tonight's dinner → hydrogel or bio-cellulose. This is where the adherence and slow-dry advantages visibly pay off: better contact, longer wear, more even plumping across the whole face.
- Budget masking done well → pulp or tencel masks with a good essence, worn lying down, removed before they dry. Spend your savings on the rest of your routine.
- Sensitive or reactive skin → fewer frills, shorter wear. Choose plain materials with short ingredient lists, skip foil-backed formats (trapped warmth can aggravate redness), and take the mask off at 10–15 minutes rather than pushing to the last drop of essence.
- Very dry skin or dry winter air → foil-backed or hydrogel, since evaporation control is your main problem.
Why Korea drove mask innovation
It's not a coincidence that every material in the matrix was popularised — and in hydrogel's case, largely developed for cosmetics — by Korean brands. Korean skincare culture treats masking as a routine step, not an occasional spa treat, and that changes the economics: when customers buy masks by the box and use them several times a week, brands compete on price-per-mask and on genuine wear experience, because a mask you use ten times reveals its flaws in a way a one-off treat never does. Daily-use pricing forced pulp and tencel masks to get cheap and good; the competitive top end pushed materials science toward bio-cellulose and hydrogel. The same ecosystem drove the essence formulas inside the sheets — the signature K-beauty ingredient toolkit of humectants, soothers and fermented extracts was refined mask by mask, box by box. Western brands mostly imported the finished idea; the iteration happened in Seoul. Are hydrogel masks better than sheet masks?
Better at specific things: adherence, essence capacity and staying wet through a long wear. For a 15-minute hydration top-up, a good tencel sheet delivers most of the same benefit at a third of the price. Hydrogel earns its premium when you want maximum fit and a 30–40 minute intensive session — event prep, parched skin, dry-air travel recovery. "Better" for every use, no.
Why did my hydrogel mask slide off?
Three usual causes. You applied it over a heavy layer of essence or oil, so it never got the skin contact it needs to grip; you stayed upright and mobile during the first few minutes, before the gel warmed and developed its cling; or the mask itself was too warm and soft from storage. Fix: apply to skin that's prepped but not slick, chill the mask beforehand, and lie back for the first five minutes while it sets in place.
How often can I sheet mask?
With a simple hydrating mask — humectants, soothers, no strong acids or high fragrance — daily masking is fine for most skin, and it's exactly how masks are used in Korea. If your skin is sensitive, or the mask contains exfoliating acids, retinoids or heavy fragrance, drop to one to three times a week and keep wear times short. Any new stinging, tightness or redness is your cue to pull frequency back, whatever the material.
Do expensive masks work better?
Sometimes, and for boring reasons: the premium usually buys a better material (adherence, slower drying) and sometimes a richer essence. It does not buy deeper absorption, and past the bio-cellulose/hydrogel tier, extra cost mostly buys packaging and brand. A €3 tencel mask with a good essence outperforms a €15 hydrogel with a mediocre one. Judge the formula and the material separately, and pay up only when the occasion justifies the fit advantage.
