"NMF" may be the least-understood term in skincare. It appears on serum boxes and in ingredient copy — "supports the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor" — and almost nobody, including some of the people writing the copy, can say what it actually refers to. That is a shame, because the NMF is one of the few marketing phrases that points at something real, specific, and measurable: a defined mixture of small molecules that sits inside the cells of your outermost skin layer and holds water there.
Understanding what NMF is changes how you shop and — more importantly — how you wash. So let's decode it properly: what the mixture contains, where it comes from, why it runs low, and what a bottle can and cannot do about it.
NMF is a water-binding mix — mostly free amino acids, plus PCA, lactate, urea and sugars — made inside skin cells from the breakdown of a protein called filaggrin. It is water-soluble, so over-washing rinses it away; topical amino acids, PCA and urea can genuinely stand in for it. Gentle washing habits protect NMF better than any serum replaces it.
The water-binding cocktail inside your skin cells
Your stratum corneum — the outermost layer of skin — is often described as bricks and mortar. The "bricks" are corneocytes: flattened, no-longer-living cells packed with keratin. The "mortar" is a lipid mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids (covered properly in our guide to the ceramide–cholesterol–fatty acid barrier trinity). The NMF lives inside the bricks.
Each corneocyte carries a concentrated pool of small, intensely hygroscopic molecules — compounds that grab water from their surroundings and hold onto it. That pool is the Natural Moisturizing Factor. Its approximate composition, established over decades of stratum corneum research, looks like this: free amino acids make up roughly 40% of it, pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA, an amino acid derivative) around 12%, lactate around 12%, urea in the mid-single digits, with sugars, minerals and other small compounds making up the rest. The exact ratios vary between people and body sites, but the headline is consistent: amino acids and their derivatives dominate.
Why does skin bother? Because a corneocyte without bound water is a hard, brittle flake. With water held inside it by the NMF, the same cell is plump and flexible — which is what makes skin feel soft, bend without micro-cracking, and reflect light evenly. NMF also keeps the enzymes that manage normal skin shedding working; those enzymes need water to function, which is why dehydrated skin gets flaky and rough rather than simply "thirsty." The filaggrin story: where NMF comes from
Here is the part almost no product page tells you: skin does not stockpile amino acids directly. It manufactures NMF through a controlled demolition.
Deep in the living epidermis, keratinocytes produce a large protein called filaggrin (the name is compressed from "filament aggregating protein"). As those cells migrate upward and flatten into corneocytes, filaggrin first does a structural job — bundling keratin filaments so the cell collapses into its tough, flattened final shape. Then, once the cell is in the upper stratum corneum, enzymes chop the now-redundant filaggrin into its component amino acids. Some of those are converted further: glutamine becomes PCA, histidine becomes urocanic acid. The demolition debris is the NMF.
Two details of this process are worth knowing. First, it is humidity-sensitive: the enzymatic breakdown of filaggrin responds to how dry the environment is, which is part of how skin adapts its own hydration chemistry to conditions. Second, it takes time — NMF is generated as cells mature over weeks, so skin cannot spike its NMF production on demand the way it can, say, sweat. Why NMF runs low: washing, weather, age, genes
The NMF's greatest strength is also its weakness: everything in it is small and water-soluble. What binds water readily also dissolves in water readily. That single fact explains most NMF depletion.
Over-washing is the biggest controllable factor. Every wash dissolves some NMF out of the uppermost corneocytes; surfactants accelerate this dramatically, and hot water more so. One gentle cleanse leaves plenty behind. Long hot showers, foaming cleansers morning and night, frequent hand-washing without replenishment — these outpace the refill rate. Most people with "mysteriously" dehydrated skin are simply washing their NMF down the drain.
Low ambient humidity drains it passively. Winter air, heated indoor air, air conditioning and airplane cabins all steepen the water gradient between skin and environment, pulling moisture out faster than NMF can hold it. This is a core mechanism behind seasonal skin trouble — covered in more depth in preventing water loss through seasonal shifts.
Age lowers the baseline. Epidermal turnover slows with age and filaggrin processing becomes less efficient, so older skin generally carries less NMF than younger skin. Genetics can cap it from birth. This deserves honesty: some people carry loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG), which means their skin simply cannot make normal amounts of the NMF precursor. These mutations are strongly associated with ichthyosis vulgaris and are one of the best-established genetic risk factors for atopic dermatitis (eczema). If your skin has been dry and eczema-prone your whole life, no cleansing tweak fully fixes that — though NMF-mimicking humectants and diligent barrier care genuinely help manage it, and this group arguably benefits from them more than anyone.
Amino acids in a bottle: realistic vs. marketing
So can a product "replenish your NMF"? Here the answer is more encouraging than usual for skincare claims — with caveats.
What is realistic: topical amino acids, sodium PCA, sodium lactate and urea are the same molecules (or near-identical salts) as the native NMF. Applied to skin, they penetrate the stratum corneum easily — they are tiny — and do the same job the native pool does: bind water inside and around corneocytes. This is not a loose analogy; urea and lactate have been used in dermatology for dry-skin conditions for decades, and urea at moderate concentrations is a workhorse of eczema and keratosis care. Calling these ingredients "NMF-mimetic" is fair chemistry, not puffery. Effects are quick (humectants work within hours) and real, but they are also temporary — you are topping up a leaky pool, not repairing the leak.
What is marketing: the implication that a topical amino acid "rebuilds" or "trains" your skin's own NMF production. Applying amino acids does not increase filaggrin synthesis, and no cosmetic ingredient has convincingly been shown to do so. Likewise, collagen or silk "amino acids" in a rinse-off cleanser mostly go down the drain with everything else. And a product that layers ten exotic humectants is not better than one that uses three sensible ones at real concentrations.
One more honest note: glycerin and hyaluronic acid are not NMF components, but they are humectants doing the same job, and glycerin in particular is as well-proven as anything in this category. The label decoder: NMF ingredients by INCI name
Ingredient lists never say "NMF." Here is how to recognize NMF-support chemistry on an actual INCI list — the more of these appearing in the first half of the list, the more seriously the formula takes hydration.

One caution when reading labels: seeing "Lactic Acid" second on a list means an exfoliating product, not an NMF serum. And ingredients listed after the preservatives are present at token levels — a sprinkle of eight amino acids at the bottom of a list is decoration.
An NMF-friendly routine, ranked by impact
Here is the uncomfortable, money-saving truth: because NMF depletion is mostly a washing-out problem, how you cleanse matters more than what you apply afterward. Ranked honestly by impact:
- Fix the washing first. Lukewarm — not hot — water. One face wash with cleanser per day (evening) is enough for most people; a morning water-only rinse preserves overnight NMF. Choose a low-foaming, sulfate-free cleanser and keep it on skin for seconds, not minutes. Shorter showers protect body skin the same way.
- Manage your air in dry seasons. A bedroom humidifier through winter heating season does quiet, continuous work no serum matches.
- Apply humectants to damp skin. An NMF-mimetic toner or serum — amino acids, PCA, glycerin — pressed into skin within a minute of cleansing gives the humectants water to grab and puts them where washing removed the native pool.
- Seal with lipids. Humectants hold water; they do not stop it leaving. A moisturizer with ceramides and fatty acids over the top slows evaporation so the water the humectants grabbed actually stays. Humectant plus occlusion is the pairing; either alone underperforms.
- Ration your exfoliants. AHAs dissolve NMF along with dead cells. Useful in moderation, but daily acid use on already-dehydrated skin digs the hole faster than steps 3–4 can fill it.
Who benefits most from adding the humectant step? People in dry climates or heated offices, frequent flyers, anyone over roughly 50, swimmers and frequent hand-washers, retinoid users (retinoids temporarily disrupt hydration), and — above all — the lifelong-dry and eczema-prone, whose native NMF supply may be genetically limited.
NMF questions, answered
Is NMF the same thing as the skin barrier?
No — they are partners. The barrier's water-proofing comes mainly from the lipid "mortar" (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) between cells; the NMF is the water-holding chemistry inside the cells. Lipids keep water in; NMF gives water something to bind to. Damaged lipids let NMF wash out faster, and low NMF makes skin stiffer and easier to crack — so problems in one usually drag the other down.
Can you permanently rebuild your NMF?
You cannot force skin to produce more filaggrin, so "permanent" is the wrong frame. What you can do is stop the losses (gentler washing, humidified air) so your natural production keeps the pool full, and top up with NMF-mimetic humectants when conditions or genetics leave a gap. That combination reliably keeps skin behaving as if its NMF were normal — it just requires maintenance, like most things in skincare.
Does drinking more water raise NMF or skin hydration?
Not meaningfully, unless you are genuinely dehydrated. Stratum corneum hydration is governed by NMF content, barrier lipids and ambient humidity — not by how many glasses you drank. Normal hydration is good for you generally; it is not a dry-skin treatment.
NMF-type humectants or hyaluronic acid — which should I choose?
You do not have to choose; they layer perfectly well. Hyaluronic acid is a large surface water-binder, while amino acids, PCA and urea are small enough to work within the corneocyte layer itself — different depths, same mission. If forced to pick one product, pick the one combining glycerin with several true NMF components; it covers more bases than a single-ingredient hyaluronic serum.
