How to Fix Hair After Summer: Removing Salt, Chlorine and Sun Damage

It's late August. Three months of sea, pool, sun and SPF are sitting in your hair right now — some of it literally crystallised on the fiber. Here is the end-of-summer reset, in the order that actually works: remove first, repair second, then ease the routine into autumn.

First, a word about the word. Hair can't "detox" — the fiber you see is not alive, has no metabolism, and eliminates nothing on its own. What marketing calls a hair detox is really two separate jobs: removal of what summer deposited on and in the fiber, and repair of what summer took out of it. That reframing matters, because the products and the order of operations are completely different for each job — and doing them in the wrong order (masking over buildup, clarifying without replenishing) is why so many September recovery attempts fail.

The damage inventory: what a summer actually leaves behind

Before choosing products, it helps to know exactly what you're removing. Four distinct residues accumulate over a summer, each with its own chemistry.

Salt. Seawater is roughly 3.5% dissolved salts. When beach hair dries, the water evaporates and the salt doesn't — it recrystallises on and just inside the cuticle. Salt is hygroscopic, so those crystals keep pulling water out of the fiber for as long as they sit there, which is why beach texture starts as tousled volume and ends, weeks later, as rough, matte, tangle-prone straw. The crystals also physically abrade the cuticle edges every time you brush.

Chlorine — and the copper riding along with it. Chlorine is an oxidiser: it strips the sebum layer that normally waterproofs the fiber and slowly oxidises both pigment and the proteins of the cuticle, leaving hair porous and dull. But the infamous green tint in blonde hair isn't chlorine itself. It's copper — from pool algaecides and plumbing — which chlorine oxidises into compounds that bind to the hair shaft. Porous, highlighted hair binds it best, which is exactly why blondes go green and dark hair merely dulls. This matters for product choice: copper is a metal, and metals need a chelator, not just a stronger detergent. The same logic applies to hard-water minerals building up in blonde hair all year round.

UV. Sunlight photo-oxidises hair the way it fades curtains. It attacks the disulphide and cystine bonds in keratin, degrades the lipids on the cuticle surface, and bleaches both natural melanin and salon dye — brassiness and fade are usually more sun than shampoo by this point in the year. This one is different from the other three: it's not a residue you can wash off, it's structural change already done to the protein. Sweat, sebum and sunscreen — the scalp layer. Heat means more sweat (which deposits its own salts), more sebum, and a summer of SPF applied along the parting. Modern sunscreens are built to resist water and film onto skin — which is precisely what makes their residue stubborn on a scalp, where it mixes with sweat salts, oil and styling product into a film that can leave roots flat and skin itchy by August.

The reset: five steps, in this order

The order is the protocol. Removal first, moisture second, protein only where diagnosed, scissors last.

Step 1 — One clarifying (or chelating) wash

These two terms get used interchangeably on labels, and they shouldn't be. A clarifying shampoo uses stronger surfactants to dissolve oils, silicones, styling film and SPF residue — anything that behaves like grease. A chelating shampoo adds ingredients such as EDTA, citric acid or phytic acid that grab metal ions — copper, calcium, magnesium, iron — which no surfactant can lift, because minerals aren't grease. So: a product-heavy, beachy summer needs clarifying; a pool-heavy summer, hard-water home, or any green or brassy cast in light hair needs chelating. When in doubt, chelating formulas generally clarify too, so they're the safer single choice for a post-summer reset. Once — maybe twice a week apart — is enough. Clarifying is a reset button, not a routine.

Step 2 — Reset the scalp

Work the clarifying wash into the scalp properly — two lathers, fingertips, a full minute. If roots still feel coated, a gentle chemical exfoliant (salicylic-acid scalp treatments dissolve the oil-and-SPF film well) once is reasonable. Honesty note: scrubs and brushes feel satisfying but mostly redistribute buildup, and aggressive exfoliation on sun-exposed scalp skin does more harm than good. Step 3 — Rebuild moisture

This step is for everyone, no diagnosis needed: salt and UV have been pulling water and lipids out of the fiber for months, and the clarifying wash just removed the last of the surface film — including the good kind. Follow it, same shower, with a genuinely rich deep conditioner or mask on lengths and ends: humectants (glycerin, panthenol) to draw water back in, emollients and oils to replace the stripped lipid layer, and enough contact time — ten to twenty minutes, ideally with warmth — for any of it to matter. Freshly clarified hair is unusually receptive, which is why removal-then-mask in that order outperforms either alone.

Step 4 — Patch in protein where needed

Protein is the step people get wrong in both directions. If your hair stretches when wet like gum and snaps, feels mushy, or has lost its spring — that's protein loss from UV and chlorine oxidation, and a protein treatment will help. If it feels dry, stiff and crunchy but doesn't stretch abnormally, it needs moisture, not protein — and adding protein will make it feel like straw. Step 5 — The honest trim assessment

Split ends do not heal, and no mask reverses them. Bond-building and "repair" products can temporarily glue a split shut and make ends look better — worth understanding, and we've looked at what molecular split-end repair can and can't do — but the fix is cosmetic and washes out. After a high-UV season, check your ends in good light: white dots, forks, and ends that catch on fingers mean that centimeter is gone. Cutting it now stops splits migrating up the shaft, which costs more length later. A small trim in September is the cheapest repair in this whole protocol.

Shifting the routine into autumn

The reset above is a one-off. What follows it, through September and October, is a quieter routine: no more weekly clarifying — once a month is plenty once pools and SPF are out of the picture — and a richer conditioning cadence than summer's, because indoor heating dries hair as effectively as sun did, just more slowly. How do I get chlorine out of my hair?

The chlorine itself mostly rinses away with fresh water — do that as soon as possible after swimming. What lingers is its damage (oxidised lipids and protein) and the metals it helped bind, especially copper. A chelating shampoo removes the metals; a deep conditioner afterwards addresses the stripping. One chelating wash after your last pool session of the season, followed by a mask, handles a typical summer.

Why is my blonde hair green after the pool?

Copper, not chlorine. Copper from algaecides and pipes gets oxidised by pool chlorine and binds to porous, lightened hair, casting green. A chelating shampoo (look for EDTA, citric or phytic acid) lifts it over one or two washes. Swimmer folklore about tomato juice or ketchup works only crudely — the red tint visually cancels green and the acidity helps slightly — but a chelator does the actual chemistry without the mess.

Do I need a detox shampoo?

You need an occasional clarifying or chelating wash — which is what most "detox" shampoos are, renamed. The honest version: hair can't detox, no shampoo pulls "toxins" from the fiber, and daily use of stripping formulas causes the very dryness you're trying to fix.
