Hard training is one of the best things you can do for long-term health, your skin included. But it also changes the conditions your skin and hair operate under, and most beauty advice is written for people who break a sweat twice a month. So let's be specific: what actually changes when you train hard, what deserves your attention first, and where ingestible beauty formulas fit once the fundamentals are covered.

What frequent sweating does mean in practice: your skin and scalp get wet, salty, then dry again several times a week; you wear occlusive kit — headbands, helmets, sports bras — against damp skin; and you end up washing far more often than a sedentary person. Friction, occlusion and over-washing are the real mechanical story, and they're all manageable with habits, not products.
Higher energy and nutrient needs. Training hard raises your requirements for energy, protein and several micronutrients. Here's the part that matters for appearance: skin and hair are metabolically low-priority tissues. When resources run short, the body serves muscle repair and vital organs first and skin gets the leftovers. That means chronic under-fuelling in a heavy training block tends to show up in skin, hair and nails early — dullness, slow healing, diffuse shedding — often before performance visibly drops.
More environmental exposure. Outdoor athletes quietly accumulate enormous UV doses — a marathon build-up can mean eight to twelve hours a week in direct sun. Swimmers add chlorine, which strips lipids from hair and skin. Cyclists add helmet friction and wind. None of this is exotic, but the volume is what separates athletes from everyone else.
The cortisol claim — handle with care. You'll often read that intense exercise "spikes cortisol and ages your skin". Hard sessions do raise cortisol temporarily; that's normal physiology and part of the adaptive signal, and there's no good evidence that a transient training spike harms skin. What plausibly matters is the chronic pattern — months of heavy training stacked on poor sleep and under-eating. Treated honestly, that is a recovery-and-fuelling problem, not a hormone problem you can drink or supplement away, and anyone selling you a "cortisol-balancing" beauty product is ahead of the evidence.
The real priorities, in order
If your skin or hair has slipped during a serious training phase, work down this list before you spend a cent on anything in a pretty bottle.
- Eat enough, full stop. The single most common skin-and-hair mistake in hard-training people — especially those combining big training volume with a "lean" diet — is chronic low energy availability. Hair follicles are among the first tissues to downshift when energy runs short, and because of the hair growth cycle's built-in delay, the shedding shows up two to three months after the deficit began. If you're training six days a week on a diet designed for someone sedentary, no supplement will out-run that math.
- Protein, spread across the day. Hair is keratin; skin's structure is largely collagen. Both are protein, and both are built from the same amino-acid pool your muscles draw on. Athletes generally need more protein than sedentary adults — most sports-nutrition bodies suggest roughly 1.4–2 g per kg of body weight — and hitting it through food covers skin and hair as a side effect.
- Iron — especially for women who train. Iron demands are higher in athletes, losses are higher (sweat, and in runners some red-cell breakdown), and menstruation stacks on top. Low iron stores are one of the best-documented nutritional contributors to hair shedding and persistent fatigue. - Wash smarter, not more. Most athletes over-wash. Skin: a prompt rinse and a gentle cleanser after training; no scrubbing, no "deep detox" washes. - Sun, if you train outdoors. Training hours are UV hours, and UV remains the single biggest external driver of visible skin aging. Daily SPF on face and neck, a cap or scalp protection on long sessions, and reapplication on anything over ninety minutes will do more for your skin over a decade than any ingestible.
- Sleep is the recovery infrastructure. Skin repair, hair-follicle activity and training adaptation all happen disproportionately during sleep. A heavy block on six hours a night undermines everything above it on this list.
Match your routine to your training load
Training load changes what's worth worrying about. A rough map:

Where nutricosmetics honestly fit
Now the question this journal gets asked: should people who train hard take beauty supplements? The honest answer: they are an optional convenience layer on top of the priorities above — never a substitute for any of them. An ingestible beauty formula will not speed your recovery, improve your performance or offset an inadequate diet, and any brand implying otherwise is over-claiming.
What a well-formulated drinkable can legitimately offer an athlete is consistency. Training life is scheduled and habitual — you already have a shaker-bottle routine — and a once-daily drinkable slots into that rhythm far more reliably than a handful of capsules you forget. The nutrients themselves earn only modest, structure/function-level language: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation; zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails. Useful housekeeping, not a training aid.
Three rules of thumb keep this sensible. First, food before formulas, always. Second, check overlap: athletes often already take a multivitamin or a sports product containing zinc or vitamin C — you don't need the same minerals from three sources. Third, if your hair is actively shedding or your skin has changed abruptly mid-block, investigate fuelling, iron and sleep with a professional before buying anything; a supplement bought to paper over under-eating is money spent on the wrong problem.
FAQ: skin, hair and hard training
Does sweating a lot cause acne?
Sweat itself is a weak culprit. What's better established is friction and occlusion — tight damp kit, helmet straps, headbands — combined with hours before cleansing. Dermatologists call the breakouts this produces acne mechanica. Rinse soon after training, choose looser kit where breakouts recur, and skip the aggressive scrubbing, which tends to make things worse.
Why is my hair shedding during a heavy training block?
The most common nutritional explanations are an energy deficit or low iron stores pushing follicles into their resting phase early — and because of the growth cycle's lag, the shedding surfaces two to three months after the cause. It usually recovers once fuelling is fixed, but persistent or patchy loss deserves a doctor's visit and a blood panel, not guesswork.
Do athletes need collagen supplements for their skin?
Need? No. The evidence on oral collagen for skin is modest and still developing, and your total daily protein intake matters far more. If your protein is already dialled in and you're curious, a collagen product is a reasonable experiment — just treat it as an extra, not a requirement of training hard.
Should I avoid antioxidant supplements around workouts?
There's a genuine scientific wrinkle here: some studies suggest high-dose isolated antioxidants (notably vitamins C and E) taken right around training may blunt part of the adaptation exercise is meant to trigger, since a little exercise-induced oxidative stress is part of the "get fitter" signal. No — and daily shampooing is one of the most common self-inflicted hair problems among athletes. A thorough water rinse handles sweat on most days; save shampoo for two or three washes a week.
Does protein powder cause breakouts?
Evidence is limited and individual. Some people report breakouts with dairy-based (whey) powders, and small studies hint at a link, but nothing is settled. If you suspect yours, a few weeks on a non-dairy protein is a cheap, harmless experiment.
Train hard, eat enough, protect your scalp from the sun, rinse more and shampoo less. If skin or hair slides during a heavy block, the cause is almost always fuel, iron or sleep — a drinkable beauty formula is a pleasant extra, never the fix.
