The gap between the top and bottom of that table is the single most useful thing to internalise as a buyer. A USP or NSF mark means an organization with no stake in the sale has looked inside the bottle. "Lab tested" in an elegant font means nothing until the brand names the lab and shows the numbers. And because certification seals do get printed fraudulently, the final check is always the certifier's own website: USP and NSF both maintain searchable databases of the products they actually certify.
How to vet a product in five minutes
You do not need a chemistry degree — you need a routine. Before buying any supplement you plan to take regularly, run this sequence:
- Look for a named third-party certifier. USP Verified, NSF, Informed Sport or similar. If a seal is present, spend thirty seconds confirming the product in the certifier's own online database. A verified seal ends the vetting early — you are done, buy with reasonable confidence.
- No seal? Hunt for a certificate of analysis (COA). Check the product page and the brand's quality or transparency page for published lab results. Some brands print a QR code linking each batch to its COA — an excellent sign. If nothing is published, email and ask; a quality-serious brand answers, a marketing-first brand deflects.
- Check for batch or lot numbers. A batch number on the packaging means the product is traceable and testable per production run. Its absence on an ingestible product is a quiet but serious warning.

Some signals are reliable enough that they should end the purchase on the spot:
- Proprietary blends that hide doses. A "blend" total with no per-ingredient amounts exists to obscure, not to protect trade secrets. You cannot judge a dose you cannot see.

- Price outliers in both directions. Marine collagen dramatically cheaper than everything else raises sourcing questions; a luxury price with no testing behind it is packaging you swallow. Price is not evidence either way.

Who should care most
Contaminant exposure is a dose-over-time problem, so risk scales with how long and how often you take a product. Three groups should hold the hardest line.
